Delete your account

How to delete your Become account and the personal data attached to it.

This page covers the Becoming mobile app (africa.becoming.app) and this website, both published by Cocoon Letters Limited. You can delete your account yourself, in the app or here. You do not need to ask us, and we do not ask you why.

In the mobile app

Me → Delete account

Open the app, go to the Me tab, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account. You will be asked to confirm. It takes effect immediately.

On this website

Sign in to delete your account

We ask you to sign in first so that nobody else can delete your account for you. You will come straight back here.

If you cannot sign in

Ask us to delete it

Lost the password, lost the email address, or no longer have the phone? Write to us from any address with the email you signed up with. We will verify that the account is yours before deleting it, and we will reply within 30 days.

What stays, and why

Published proposals, bills and feed posts you wrote

The text stays on the platform, with your name removed. They are part of a public record other people have replied to and relied on.

Signature and endorsement totals

A petition that showed 41,200 signatures still shows 41,200. The count survives; you are no longer one of the names behind it.

Moderation and audit records

Entries showing that an action was taken, with your identity removed. A record that could be silently unwound is not a record.

None of what stays identifies you. Your name is not on it, and nothing links it back to the account you deleted.

How long it takes

  • Immediately. Everything in the deleted list above is removed from our live database as you confirm, not queued for a nightly job.
  • Within 30 days. Encrypted database backups still hold the old rows until they age out. They are never read except to recover from a failure, and we do not restore a deleted account from them.

Deleting is not the only option. If you only want to stop notifications, sign out on that device and the token for it is removed. If something written about you is wrong, the contact page is faster than deleting your account. What we collect and why is set out in the Privacy Policy.
